Understanding the ADHD brain with a brain health expert

This week’s guest is Brittany Shane Hochstetler. Avidly passionate about anything related to psychology, the brain, and overall mental health, Brittany’s passion for helping others with ADHD took off when her son was diagnosed with ADHD, as well as recognising that she also struggled to understand why she felt she had it much harder than others when she was growing up.

Brittany has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Indiana University East, a Master of Arts in Positive Psychology from Indiana Wesleyan University and received her certification in Professional Brain Health from Amen Clinics; she now devotes her time to learning more about the ADHD brain to support others going through the same thing.

During the episode, Kate and Brittany speak about:

  • The role of the prefrontal cortex and amygdala on emotional dysregulation
  • Burnout and ADHD
  • Productivity guilt - never doing enough but feeling like we never get to achieve anything.
  • How to switch off with ADHD
  • Empathy and the ADHD brain
  • High expectations and inner pressure
  • Being aware of our ADHD in the background to prevent the burnout cycle
  • Blood sugar, 'hanger' and ADHD - why we need to eat well
  • Interoception and ADHD - not recognising that we're hungry, thirsty or tired
  • Parenting kids with ADHD alongside our ADHD
  • The sensory side of ADHD - being a seeker or an avoider
  • How you can be stimulated with ADHD
