ADHD and alcohol addiction...

This week’s guest is Faye Lawrence. Faye founded Untoxicated, Australia’s largest alcohol-free social community with around 10,000 members. Having been a heavy but high-functioning drinker since her teens, she wound up in inpatient detox in late 2017 after the wheels fell off. Determined not to let her sobriety ruin her social life, Untoxicated was born. Faye was recently diagnosed with ADHD (combined type) at the ripe old age of 48, and is passionate about creating awareness about the strong link between ADHD and alcohol dependence, hoping it might help reduce similar pitfalls for other women.

Faye is a TEDx speaker, co-author, has been featured widely across media and advocates to normalise living alcohol-free and reduce the stigma around addiction.

During this episode, Kate and Faye discuss:

  • ADHD and addiction connections
  • Struggling with Alcohol use
  • Family addiction patterns
  • Family compassion with the understanding of neurodiversity
  • ADHD screening in treatment centres
  • Social anxiety and drinking
  • The clarity post ADHD diagnosis
  • Why ADHD can make you more susceptible to addiction
  • Socialising post recovery
  • How Faye is finding ADHD medication
  • How to look at your own drinking habits
